Well, well, well. It seems as though my signature look is making it's way into the mainstream. It's not like I was ever re-inventing the hair wheel, but I liked to think that my obsession with big hair was only reflected in rock stars, geriatrics, and retro chicks. Now high fashion is honing in on the fine tooth comb that makes it all possible, unless of course you're one of the lazy ones who opts for a Bump It. For shame! We all know that backcombing, a little root booster, and some Goth Juice does the trick. I refuse to let my hair go flat, but I guess now I have some competition based on this New York Times slideshow. I still think I could beat those broads in a tease off - they're no match for my finely honed skills!

The Bigger, The Better

The King
My first serious crush was on a gentleman named Elvis Aaron Presley. Everything about him screamed out to me: his music, his style, his moves, and most of all, that hair. There's something about a well executed pompadour that makes me wish I could go back in time - if only to witness a world in which men actually cared about their locks. In celebration of Elvis Week (August 8 – 16) and in honor of my everlasting love for The King, here's a video of a 1956 rendition of "Blue Suede Shoes". Throughout his career Elvis carried himself with unmatched charisma and charm, and a sense of humor that could never be crushed. In every performance (even this staged one) you can tell that he lived and breathed music, and loved the spectacle of it all - his chuckle and knowing smile say it all.

And so it begins...
This blog has been in the works for a few months now, and thank goodness it's finally seeing the light of day! After finishing my website (Google Analytics and all) I'm ready to start blogging, but some may ask 'What will an unemployed writer blog about?' Great question - I'll be blogging about all the things I get excited about while my friends are at work. Whether that means writing about the Werewolf Boy in Russia, a new item my inner shopoholic craves, or a recipe I can't wait to try out, brace yourself for a look into the inner workings of my mind grapes.
Also in case you're wondering, the blog is called 'Big Hair, Small Hips' for a reason. As a self-proclaimed haircentric, those who know me can attest to my love of volume and height - and just like the legendary Dolly Parton I abide by the golden rule: The bigger the hair, the smaller the hips!
Onward & upward,
.Laura.
