I'm obviously an animal person, but living in New York the only animals I get to see on a day-to-day basis are flying rats and canines. New Yorkers might think they have it all, but what we lack is a tangible link to nature. Sure, we may have the occasional coyote in Central Park, but that's nothing compared to what's really roaming out there. Photographer Joel Sartore knows all about the great beyond. As a National Geographic Magazine contributor, he spends his days capturing a huge range of creatures from across the globe. For his most recent book, Rare, he focused on documenting America's endangered species and the results are astounding. Another genius idea from the Japanese: Cat Cafés. Since 2008 a handful of these establishments have popped up in Tokyo, welcoming locals and tourists alike. Let's face it, cats get a bad rap because they have the reputation of being indifferent, antisocial or downright mean. These cat chill zones are a great way to combat those stereotypes. Who wouldn't want to take a quick snuggle with one of these little guys?

Artist Stephen Eichhorn created this series of plants on cats, and I just can't look away. There's nothing groundbreaking about this work - no hidden meaning for us to scratch our heads over. It's simple really, just cacti, succulents, and flowers coupled with cat glamour shots. Why didn't I think of this?

Going To The Dogs

This has been making the interweb rounds for a few weeks now, but I still find it hilarious. I've tested out this theme song theory on The Boyz, but have found that their only reaction is to my obvious excitement in anticipation of watching an episode. I'm not exaggerating when I say that when I hear the theme song I get incredibly giddy. There's nothing like a great crime drama to relax me after a long day at work... not sure why that is but I'm still addicted to Law & Order even after all these years of watching it, and I truly dread the day when I will have seen every episode. Dun dun dun-dun-dun-dun-duuuun! Ahhhh that's the stuff.

Design Within Reach (No, Really!)

Most pet owners treat their animals like children. Don't deny it - you know it's true. From training them, disciplining them, feeding them, and loving them, the average North American pet owner spoils their fuzzballs more than they spoil themselves. I like the idea of investing in a pet accessory that isn't sore on the eyes, or the wallet. Something that doesn't scream Petco or Petsmart; something that's just as stylish as the rest of your apartment. Of course Etsy has the perfect solution, with these great re-purposed vintage suitcase pet beds. The legs are also made from resalvaged chairs and table legs, and painted to match the handmade pillow inserts. There's no denying that your pet will be sleeping in style with this little number.

There's something off about seeing one of nature's creatures, curiously poking at one of man's most unnatural creations: Jell-O. But squirrel monkeys are just so darn cute, that you can't help but watch them as they try to decipher just what the heck they are looking at. The Bronx Zoo claims that this is a special holiday treat "Jell-O enrichment" for the monkeys, that helps them "stimulate their foraging instincts." If only I was allowed to "stimulate my foraging instincts" like that when I was a kid. Now that's what I call a blueberry surprise!

From Thundercats to Catwoman, the Pink Panther and the epic that is Avatar, cats have been popping up in pop culture for decades. Somehow their fictional presence has always been marred by the stigma that surrounds them in the real world. Still seen as mysterious, nasty, dark creatures, cats always play second fiddle to their canine rivals. Man's best friend, the pack hunter, the loyal side kick, is often matched against the rogue, aloof, independent feline, so its no wonder that those who care for them often get a bad rap too. But no longer! With the help of the feline-like Na'vi of Avatar and the legendary Garfield, hopefully we'll all soften our hearts to the lesser loved species. Helping to break the myth of the "crazy cat lady" is Nathan Davis, a specialist in the U.S. Army who recently won Tidy Cats Campaign to End Cattiness with his cats Frank Sinatra and Sergeant Snog. Oh My Sweet Lord

There are no words to express the delight found in the pages of Glamourpuss: The Enchanting World of Kitty Wigs... yes, kitties with wigs. I read about this last week while flipping through a copy of People magazine at my hair salon, and almost choked on my own saliva. Then earlier this week a friend sent me an email with a link to their site and the subject line "do you love it?" The answer is a resounding yes. Comedian Bobcat Goldthwait says it best on their web site:

"Little animals in clothes have always brought me a lot of joy but kitty wigs?! Holy crap! I felt like a star-bellied sneetch. Why are kitty wigs so awesome? It's simple: cats play it straight. They don't lean on the joke. They get it. Cats are the Buster Keatons of the animal kingdom. Cats in wigs and the people who take their pictures bring me a lot of happiness and make me feel not so alone in this world."

The Revenge Of The Cat Lady

People who bring their dogs into stores, cafés, and restaurants are deemed 'normal', but a lady who prefers the quiet comfort of a feline is the crazy one - that just ain't right. The eternal debate over what qualifies someone as a 'cat lady' is still unresolved, but I think Miu Miu's runway show today made it a little cooler, and a lot sexier to be a cat lover. Many of her feminine designs were peppered with cat brooches, and her prints were utterly purrrrfect (I couldn't help myself!) Check out those chunky platform heels - a little bit of glam rock and a whole lot of attitude! Miuccia Prada's collection may be a cat lady's wet dream, but it also appeals to the little girl in all of us... if fashion was always this much fun wouldn't we always want to play dress up?

Soaking Up The Sun

I often get accused of playing favorites when it comes to The Boys, and I have to admit that sometimes these accusations are aren't far from the truth. It's always a challenge to welcome a new member into the fold, and it definitely took me a while to get used to having two fur balls instead of just one. Lately Jean has been a real pleasure to have around, especially when he sits by me as I type away on my laptop. Here he is enjoying the last bits of summer sun, rolling around like a clown.

Dirty Business

Two things that must be stated before you view this video. First, this is my first attempt at putting together a viral animal clip, so be kind. It was slapped together with the help of my shoddy cell phone camera and iMovie, so once I get my hands on a real camcorder things should improve.
